Page 18.

Coughing ceased, she raises her head. Sees they’re far out.

KAY:
The undertow !!..

SKY:
Don’t worry. Got you, now. Haven’t lost me one Kay, yet! Not going let a little thing like an undertow…

Large wave rocks them. Sky prevents her from sliding off.

SKY: (cont’d)
Swimming us across it so hang on tight, okay? May be a rough ride, and there’s no complimentary snack.

Kay smiles weakly. Stifles retort. Saddens. Sky ponders that.

KAY:
I’m so sorry.
SKY:
Betta be, ha.
KAY:
Thought I could take them!
SKY:
Trying impress me, huh? Or drown on me? Anyway, not so impressed!..
KAY:
You’re the fearless one with the death wish!
SKY:
Not. I know my limits.
KAY:
Do you? Come on, Sky! Said it a thousand times: Sky got no limit..
SKY:
But near had me an expiry date, ha.
KAY:
Almost bought it, me. You, for me.

SKY:
(fist-pounds skateboard!)
Yeah. But for.. . Told you how sweet she is too! Near much as..

Page 19.

KAY:
You ever turn off the charm..?

Sky grins. Two jet-skis are heard rapidly approaching. Kay reaches up and pulls down Sky’s head, lips, down upon her’s. Sky’s eyes look out past the side of her head. Sees the jet-ski ten yards from them. He pulls up out of the kiss.

KAY: (cont’d)
So why start now, huh?..

Sky gives her a what the hell look. Leans back down. Kisses her again. Astonished, jetski male rescuer shakes his head.

NARRATOR /WILD BILL (V.O.)
Yep, near bought ocean sea-floor there. Ever since, Kay had issues with danger. And that means Sky.

Topped by a mid twenties lady life-guard, the second jet-ski gets close. Meantime, thirty-ish male rescuer helps Sky pluck Kay off the surfboard safely up onto the back of his jetski. He reaches for Sky. Clutching his lifesaver surfboard, Sky grins but waves him off, the second fairer rescuer arriving. She gladly holds out her arm for him. Sky takes hold of it.  Surfboard under arm he sits behind her, other arm about her. Despite hyperthermic, half drowned, rueful Kay irked, blurts.

KAY:
Don’t hang on her too tight, Sky.
SKY:
(to his female rescuer)
Jealous type, ha.

Hot gal of lifeguard smiles at Sky too warmly, Kay opens her eyes even more wide alert. Lifeguard whips her water chariot around in a swift sharp arc. Heads for the shore, on off away from Kay with the other lifeguard as they seem plod to shore. Jetski, with Sky recedes. Screen dissolves. Resolves to..

NARRATOR /WILD BILL (V.O.)
Sky didn’t just arrive outta the well wild blue sky. Hada first be..

EXT. ..this scene here, found at very bottom of Page 19 gets into whole other section of  the storyline (namely ALL NEW never posted anywhere before events relating to Sky’s dad, way back to the way cool stuff he’d been doing back then.., in kind of Forrest Gump manner).

Sky plunges down the last wave trough between them and loses sight of her. Frantically, he swims up the interceding wave face. On it, he sees, only, his crazily bobbing surfboard. While being driven down the next trough, he plunges his head beneath the surface. Sees fall deeper into ocean abyss two flashes of red bikini – Kay, arms at rest, head tilted, body still. Before he can do anything, Sky’s uplifted by a rising  wave. Gasping, his face breaks back up into the sea of air.

Sky takes a deep breath. Arcing his body down into the ocean, he dives. Kicks out with his legs like a human dolphin. He sweeps powerful swings of his arms back. Legs kick force-ably. His eyes are glued on Kay falling amid ever deepening glooms of ocean depth. She draws slowly nearer him.

He closes on her. Gets to a spot just above her. Reaches out an arm. Hooks it underneath one of her shoulders and arms. He uses his other arm to stroke them upwards for the surface. Burdened by Kay’s dead weight, strokes limited to one arm, gravity, and the ocean’s possessive grip, they rise agonizingly slow. Near exhaustion, his strokes, kicks, weaken.

Surface nears. With a last reserve of will, Sky thrusts down his arms. Kicks legs violently out. Makes way for the yellow, pitching surfboard, tantalizingly near yet in exhaustion far.. . He emerges beside the board. Sweeps his free arm on over it. Grasps it tightly. He pulls Kay up, slides her back down flat on it. He drapes an arm over her pinning her there.

He bows his head over her. Seals his lips on her lips. He breathes into her hard. Presses the forearm of the arm not holding her into her abdomen. Pulls back his forearm, pushes it back down. He yanks his head back. Catches a deep breath. Watches Kay for any sign of life. None. He repeats his action of breathing air into Kay, heaving her trim belly in and out.

Several times, until Kay coughs out a gurgle of water. Gurgles out more water. Breathing labored but lungs cleared, her eyes open, dazed and confused, until she discerns it’s Sky above her. Overcome, Sky presses lips back on hers, in kiss.

KAY
Kulf, kauf…, Sky!
SKY:
Who else, hey?!
KAY
Kulf, kauf… .
Keep that, kulf, up, and I.., kuaf, may get amnesia.

SKY:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             (yells over his shoulders)
Whack or not, got to get to her, but and quick!
THE BLACK GIRL:
She better not drown! The nerve she got. Trying make me feel responsi..

Her voice tails away. Despite her anger, her eyes fill tearfully in worry. She watches Sky get to the shoreline. A black youth Sky’s age races over to meet Sky by the water’s edge.

BLACK YOUTH:
What’s the matter Sky?

SKY:
Bad undertow. Kay, she’s..

BLACK YOUTH:
Kay?! No the way hey. She’d never…

SKY:
But did! Fetch the water ski patrol. I’m going out…

BLACK YOUTH:
Won’t undertow take you too!?

There’s no reply as Sky races into the waves. Just as Sky dives headlong into the first chest-high one, he shouts back.

SKY:
Just let it try, ha!

Image dissolves out. And resolves back short while later to Sky. He swims against heaving waves, strong winds, and a driving downpour of rain. Thunder roars. Lightening streaks the dark sky. He’s but halfway to Kay. She’s yet a long ways from him, and even much farther out from shore than before.

Time-lapsing as Sky battles the waves. He rides up steep wave crests. Catches atop them glimpses of Kay becoming feeble in her struggle to keep draped overtop Sky’s surfboard. He plunges down off the crests into deep intervening troughs, losing sight of Kay. Each time, it spurs him to more furious-swim back on up the next wave crest.

Normal time, Sky swims up a steep wave. Comes atop its crest. Spies Kay, the stark contrast of her red bikini with broiling grey sea, twenty yards off. Losing consciousness, her pale arms slide off his surfboard. She slips under the cold waves.

Distracted by the fond admiration, Sky fails to see Kay edge away from the group. She grabs Sky’s own surfboard. Holds it as she walks up the beach back the way Sky had come down it.. Up beach a ways, Kay heads for the waterline still not noted.

Scene dissolves away to a few minutes later. Sparse cold raindrops fall, whipped by wind. Clouds portend a downpour soon.

All but black girl and Sky skitter off for the paved walkway and the sheltering establishments that border it. Several of them stop at times. Look back at Sky. Urge him to come along before resuming their retreat from the worsening weather.

Alone with the groping black girl, feeling uncomfortably coralled, imprisoned for first time, Sky’s eyes looks about for Kay, nowhere to be seen. He spots that his surfboard’s gone. His brow furrows in worry. His eyes dart out along the ocean.

THE BLACK GIRL:
Something the matter, Sky?

SKY:
See Kay around, lately…?

THE BLACK GIRL:
Didn’t you see her go? Left half hour ago. Even took..

SKY:
.. My board. Look I got to run!

THE BLACK GIRL:
Skyyyy, it’s raining! I want you to take me home. I’m cold. Hold me uh.

SKY:
Man. Wicked gnarly.., out there! My board’s gone.., and Kay’s with it..

THE BLACK GIRL:
Surely, you can’t think..

SKY:
(as eyes probe the waves)
Think..? I know! Crap! I see.., someone. Way the frig out! Got to be her. Trapped by the undertow!

THE BLACK GIRL:
She’s bonkers -going out in that! Just trying being as whack as you.

Zipping back up his wet-suit, Sky charges off for the ocean..

At last possible moment, Sky drops down off a swell. Slants a path in behind, across the back of his rival. Other side of him, Sky shoots on out in front. He stretches his lead more. Distracted seeing Sky recede away, other surfer loses footing on his board. Wiping out, he’s flung off the wave. Falls out of sight behind its rising crest. Judges eyes turn to Sky.

Wave his own, Sky majestically winds his way up, down off the wave lip, back and forth across the wave face doing crisp cutbacks. He walks up and down his board. Swings his board a complete three hundred and sixty degrees arc right around.

End of competition horn sounds. Sky’s rival and couple more surfers, miffed, slam arms or boards down hard on the water. A few paddle over to Sky. Lift him up on their shoulders. Sky pumps one arm triumphantly juiced! Scene dissolves away..

EXT. HUNTINGTON BEACH, SAME DAY – DAY, AN HOUR LATER

It’s an hour later, same beach up a ways from the podium. Crowd’s dispersed. Day’s passed into early evening. Wind’s stouter, waves more convoluted. Dark low clouds forbode. Holding surfboard cradled in one arm, a big surf championship trophy under other, down the beach Sky casually strides to a cluster of attractive girls his age. All stare fondly at him.

NARRATOR /WILD BILL
The very same day, Sky’s crazy wild streak must of rubbed off on her…

The girls call out ‘Sky’ in a chorus of greeting. Not Kay. Sky spikes his surfboard into the sand and walks by it. The voice of a pretty black girl rises above the murmur.

THE BLACK GIRL:
Sky! You won, again!
SKY:
Just because I mean to please!

All the girls giggle but Kay. She flinches, bites her tongue. Sky catches that, amused. Deliberately to irk her, he places his arm over the black girl’s shoulder. She snuggles underneath it. Impulsively, she swivels in front of Sky, hooks her left arm behind his neck. Plants a smooch on his lips.

Another girl rushes in, lifts up the black gal’s left arm. Sneaks in-between her and Sky. Several girls chatter at him.

SKY:
Just like to kid around. Have fun. Don’t you?
KAY:
Depends on what you mean by fun..

Sky’s hands of mind their own reach over into the girl’s mane of hair, and tussles it all askew. It annoys her.

SKY:
You know boarding, surfing, doing wicked cool stuff. Messing about.

Kay swats hands from her hair. He pecks kiss on her forehead.

KAY:
See that! Lay off the hair, you! Seen you about. On the tube too.

SKY:
Yeah. Some impressed, huh!..

She gives him a scaldingly sarcastic, yet coy, look.

KAY:
Cause always doin crazy stuff? Like your whack dad -that why?..
SKY:
(satiric grin bit irked
Like, soo good at it! Okay, Kay ha.

NARRATOR /WILD BILL (V.O.)
Sky wasn’t pulling her um, hair. At the Under Fourteens a year later..

EXT. HUNTINGTON BEACH -AFTERNOON, A YEAR LATER, 1995

Another day at Huntington Beach. This one’s briskly windy. Dark threatening clouds loom out over the ocean horizon. Few surfers are out on jagged rough surf. Waves crest up to fifteen foot high. Pockets of people on the beach watch.

On centrally placed platform stage, four judges crane their necks from one surfer to the next evaluating each competitor. Every once and a while they jot down on small pads.

All eyes fall on Sky, thirteen, in yellow wet-suit and another blonde, black wet-suit competitor. They’re competing to get first onto the best wave of the set, a sixteen footer..

 SKY:
O, what the heck!

Susha extends a hand. Sky takes it. She surprises him by turning him about to face her. Kisses him. Hand in hand, they turn to face the maelstrom below. Sway in tandem, readying until..,  they leap off together into the veil of fire and smoke.

NARRATOR /WILD BILL (V.O.)

Lucky for him, don’t think ever told Kay all about it. Knew better.

EXT. HUNTINGTON BEACH – DAY, TWO AND HALF YEARS BEFORE, 1994

Words appear: Huntington Beach, Spring 1994. Fade out. On the crowed beach, it’s a perfect sunny mid-morning. Waves on the ocean are cresting eight to ten foot high. Surfers are competing among them to get first out onto the best of the waves.

Sky, twelve, catches the biggest of the waves, just beating a rivaling surfer to it. On it, Sky carves up and down the wave face with natural ease. He skitters atop its crest. Drops down sharply off it. Kicks back across the wave face...

NARRATOR /WILD BILL (V.O.)
Knew better. Oh, Kay have given him heck! Yeah, told me of the time first met her two years before. Twelve then.

Shots of surfers treading water, watching awed Sky ride out his wave. Scene dissolves to a time here later that morning. Sky wades ashore carrying his surfboard. On the beach, he  walks along the damp sand. He spots a seated girl his age. She’s attractive with reddish auburn hair. Her deep emerald bright eyes eye his own fixated by her.

Grinning, Sky walks over to her with a swagger. She rises up slowly to stand and greet him.. Sort of..

KAY:
You’re Sky, aren’t you? I’m Kay.
SKY:
O.., Kay.., Kay. Okay?
KAY:
(chidingly laughing)
Real dumb aleck, aren’t you?!

He lies board on asphalt, hops on. Kicks back. Gains speed, plunges down obscured hill to flickering amber glow below.

EXT. ROOFTOP, THREE STORY VICTORIA HOME, ABLAZE – NIGHT, 1996

Green and orange letter words: Same night, fifteen minutes  later. Maine 1996, Halloween. Fade out. Scene fades in. Sky and girl named Susha, dark eyes, seventeen to Sky’s near fifteen age, stand at roof top edge on the back side of a three story, spookily old Victoria home. House is engulfed in flame amid dense dark and grey smoke and night of frosty fog..

All but Sky’s head is cloaked in black by his Night-Shadow figure Halloween costume. Susha’s wears a thigh baring green and purple dress resembled like an orchid.

SKY:
Yikes! Gnarly bad here, too!
SUSHA:
Shh! Do you trust me?
SKY:
Wha…??
SUSHA:
There’s a pond. We got to jump.
SKY:
That’s nuts! Got to be thirty-fiv..
SUSHA:
I trusted you! Trust me, now..

A window blows out two floors below them. A long finger of yellow curling flame shoots out into the night. Obscured by fog, smoke, and night, lit falteringly by the flames, Sky’s hard probing eyes see far below only the vaguest impression of a round dark depression.

SKY:
Got water, enough, in it, still?!
SUSHA:
Soon find out.., ha.
SKY:
(grinning ruefully)
Hey, leave the joking to me!

He returns a dubious look down. Locks a gaze over on her   face, into her eyes. Then all tension releases within him..

He heads off, followed by his motley and less assured flock. Couple glance back at Sky, hankering to hang around with him.

EXT. SANTA MONICA (SECOND PREVIOUS SCENE CON’T) – SUMMER 1995

KAY:
…don’t need that.

High above a yellow and blue para-sail drifts down.

KAY: (cont’d)
Already enough guck in that ocean  you surf in all day long, ha.

The para-sail passes in front of the sun.

SKY:
Yeah. Someday just may move on to.., bluer, horizons. Up there!

Kay follows his gaze up to the para-sail.

KAY: You can’t mean…?

Sky smiles. She leans over him, pinning him below her.

KAY: (cont’d)
Kidding me, right? Why you’d go and  do that for? Uh?

SKY:
Cause it’s.., there, ha. Like it’s  all meant to be, for me. The name’s  Sky after-all… .

KAY:
That mean you’re sky-brained too?!

Scene dissolves away..

NARRATOR/WILD BILL (V.O.)
Fleece wasn’t right about Sky, it  being his first time jump smack dab into a real tricky soup…

EXT. FOGGY, TOWN HIGHWAY/MAIN – NIGHT

Near fifteen, Sky in the Night Shadow costume he’d conjured,  holding a red skateboard, stands hilltop amidst the highway that winds down steep curved hill to split town below in two.

SKY:
(abnormally furious)
Leave my mom out of this!
KAY:
I care, Sky! Don’t listen to him!
YOUTH GANG LEADER:
Yeah, or what?
SKY:
(grins ferociously)
Want to find out, huh?!
YOUTH GANG LEADER:
You tryin scare me. Me?! See that,  think he can…

Sky pushes the youth back hard. Astounded, shaken, the youth cringes a moment. Composes. Flashes Sky a cruel snarl.

YOUTH GANG LEADER: (cont’d)
You crazy as your ole man! No wonder you momma left you weirdos!..

Sky, afire, glares at him. Steps in close to his foe. Quirkily smiles, troubled but defiant. Youth stumbles back a few steps. Hastily grabs a switchblade from a pocket. Flips out  its blade. Again, Sky doesn’t flinch. Boostered by his weapon but bothered by Sky’s bold stance, the youth taunts Sky.

YOUTH GANG LEADER: (cont’d)
Want me cut up “the Sky”?
SKY:
Want to try?
KAY:
Sky, he means it!
SKY:
(smiling oddly)
Just let him try, Kay.

Youth feigns a lunge. Posed solidly, Sky doesn’t budge except  to extend his arms out in front of him ready to counter an attack. Yet agitated but unsettled, confounded and intimidated, the head of the gang flips knife’s blade back in its housing.

YOUTH GANG LEADER:
Lucky you so many people. One day,  we meet again! Come on, let’s go. Guy don’t know what good for him.
